| Known locally as ‘Issan’ (an adaptation of the English word ‘eastern’), the Northeast of Thailand is the country’s largest region and a place visitors tend to explore less than other regions. Essentially a series of flat plains with the Phu Pan mountain ranges running down their middle, the northeast has been influenced by a number of ancient civilizations (including the Khmers), all of which left their ruins, their historical sites and their artefacts (most of which are now housed in the area’s numerous museums). |
The region is also home to traditional culture and ways of life that exist around specific crafts and trades. The region produces world renowned silk and handicrafts which make exquisite gifts or souvenirs. It is also a place of natural beauty and a very spicy interpretation of Thai cuisine! But most of all it is a region of community; few places in Thailand have Issan’s community feel and even a short visit reveals how friendly north-eastern people are.
The northeast is a diverse region with a lot to offer the visitor – not least sites showing some of the most important dinosaur fossils in this part of the world. You should seriously consider a visit to Issan if you have the opportunity – it will be well worth the effort. |
